Why don't you all just cut off your own feet and forget the worry of it all.

Re: Gout
Dursley, just trial and error really mate, each time I got an attack I had a think about what I'd eaten the previous 24 hours and noticed I'd often eaten prawns, marmite or snacks that contain yeast extract (check out the ingredients, it's surprising how
many savoury snacks contain it!)
Good luck

My old man has recently started getting this, so I'm expecting my first attack in 20 odd years.

Re: Gout
I'm with Hatred. I have had gout a few times over the last few years, and every time it has been an accumulation from drinking. It's not an allergic reaction to a specific drink or food I could avoid.

Although, my grandad said that he noticed red wine was a problem for him so avoids it, but can drink other drinks that don't flare up.

Re: Gout
Least your in the UK. I got my first attack on the last day of an all inclusive in Ibiza. Thought I had broken my foot playing beach football. Went to the pharmacy out there, they had a feel gave me these pain killers (which are banned in the UK) best painkillers I've ever had. Went from an invalid to Nijinsky in the space of a day. Got home and the quack put the tablets in the bin, all he said was bad for kidney! How comes 3 GP visits? Blood test can give you the bad news

Re: Gout
Cheers. Still trying to confirm if it's definitely gout. Symptoms match. Runs in the family. I've been fairly high purine the last few months (fairly protein heavy diet). Had some kind of virus that put me out of action for about 3 days. Week later felt recovered then the big toe flared up. Has taken 3 weeks and 3 GP visits to get to a point where I can walk comfortably (when dosed up).

Re: Gout
The Dursley Massive, my quack was superb, said it was 50per cent heritage (my old man has got it) and 50 per cent lifestyle. Just got to manage it mate, get the first attack out the way (it seemed to me it would never end) then just start drinking shit loads of water and green tea (I swear by it). I can always feel it happening and get bang on the h2o you end up pissing it out.

Re: Gout
"It don't work like that"

Well I've had enough gout unfortunately to know for me it does work like that thanks.

Food/Drinks that are high in purines brings on attacks of gout.

If I eat marmite (yeast is high in purines) or wine in the past it has always been followed quickly by an attack of gout.

Since I have cut those out I've not had an attack.

Dehydration also fucks my world so this week in this heat and on the central line could be hell.

Mickey

How did you figure out those were the triggers?

Mickey Rat 12:17 Mon Jun 29
Re: Gout
I was getting it more and more often, triggers could be prawns, marmite or getting dehydrated but somtimes got it for no apparent reason, I mostly got it in my ankle joints but after getting it in my knee several times and having two operations I was put on allopurinols, have to take 2-3 a day but haven't had an attack since, I hate being dependant on taking drugs every day but it's better than the days of agony (and it really is agony)

Re: Gout
Ray Winstone.

Exactly the same mate, I thought I was fucking odd, the less I drink the worse it gets. I'm sure the quacks will disagree

Sorry to hear about that Leonard Hope it improves quick Gout is very nasty.

Re: Gout
Hatred

That was my understanding, but sufferers tend to talk of certain foods triggering it. I have an aunt who claims cider triggers it. A family friend says shellfish and white wine.

Re: Gout
I tend to get it if I abstain from alcohol, weird I know but it's a mighty good reason to carry on supping!

Re: Gout
It don't work like that. A gout attack occurs after enough uric acid has built up in your blood that it causes crystals in the joints.

It doesn't mean if you eat some liver you'll have a flare up tomorrow.

whufcroe 11:59 Sun Jun 28
Re: Gout
Within hours

Thought I was on my way to my first attack in about 3 years yesterday as my big toe started to ache, looked red, swollen and was very warm but today it's settled right down, fingers crossed

The Dursley Massive 11:40 Sun Jun 28
Re: Gout
Right you gouty bastards,

Appear to be on the tail end of my first gout attack. It wasn't fun.

Those of you who have identified the triggers; how long after you've consumed the trigger foods/drinks does the attack kick in? I'm guessing it's different for individuals, but are we talking hours, days or weeks?
